Students build their own solid fuel powered rocket. Learn the physics of rocketry as well as rocket safety. The rockets are launched at your school field with the Long Island Science Center rocket launchers. Each participant will measure the height of their rocket as it soars using an altimeter. All materials included. An unforgettable experience. (Offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer.)

The power of the lever is explored with the creation of this medieval machine. Learn how simple machines contributed to modern machinery. Launch marshmallows, sponges and ping pong balls while measuring distance and direction. Participants build a fully operational catapult to take home. A challenging and entertaining experience.

As architectural engineers, participants design and build their very own bridge. The object is to build a structurally sound bridge that will hold as much weight as possible and withstand the tremors of an earthquake. Learn about different types of bridges such as Truss, Beam and Suspension as well as the effects of the forces of nature on their structure. Compression, tension, gravity and other forces are also discussed. This two day engineering challenge culminates with testing their design using Science Olympiad Structure Testers and the Long Island Science Center Earthquake Machine.

Using craft sticks and glue participants explore the World of Bridge Building. During this engineering challenge each child will design and build his/her very own bridge to take home. Students may use low temperature glue guns.
GEODESIC GUMDROP DOMES
K - 3rd
Science Center Visit:
(1 1/2 hrs) $8 per student
Max: 50 students |

Max: 25 students |
Learn about one of architecture’s most intriguing structures-the Geodesic Dome, a sphere-like structure composed of a complex network of triangles. The geodesic dome’s strength is due to the fact that triangles are very stable shapes. Test the strength of this triangular structure by building your very own dome using toothpicks and gumdrops.
HOVER CRAFTS
1st - 6th

Be an engineer and make a vehicle that floats on air. Students examine the effects of friction on moving vehicles and explore alternative types of energy and locomotion. They test various hovercrafts and build their own. Students may use low temperature glue guns.
STRAW ROCKETS
2nd - 6th
Science Center Visit:
(1 1/2 hrs) $8 per student

Design and build a “house friendly” rocket. Learn the basic physics of rocketry, including understanding how rockets launch and the natural forces acting against them. The program concludes with a rocket launch (inside) where students test their own rocket design using air pressure. Aerodynamics, trajectory, altitude, distance, thrust and Newton’s Laws of Motion are introduced. **A large room is required.
ACTION CONTRAPTION: Rube Goldberg
3rd - 6th

$275 Single Presentation *
Max: 26 students |
Students work in pairs to brainstorm and design a machine or “contraption”. Imagination and experimentation come alive as participants build their very own “contraption” that will make an easy task very complicated. A challenging hands-on experience. This programs is based on Rube Goldberg, the famous cartoonist, and his quirky view of complicated machines. All materials included. Students may use low temperature glue guns. Appropriate for gifted programs.
BALLOON POWERED VEHICLE

Max: 25 students |
During this challenging and creative program, participants build their very own vehicle powered by a balloon motor. Using the concept of Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion participants design, hypothesize, build and test their vehicle. The object is to build a vehicle that rolls both straight and far.

Build a prototype of a wind driven skimmer sailboat that glides across the floor. Working in pairs, participants will be challenged to build a skimmer that glides straight and far across the floor. The prototype will be tested and redesigned to achieve the best results. Hypothesis and systematic problem solving provide a great introduction to the engineering design process.
